A pregnant woman has confessed to leaving the scene of a tragic e-scooter accident that resulted in the death of a teenage brother and his younger sister.
The incident, which took place in Pitsea, Essex, claimed the lives of 16-year-old Roman Casselden and his nine-year-old sister Darcie. Deimante Ziobryte, a 21-year-old from Benfleet, Essex, tearfully admitted her actions in court and was cautioned by magistrates about the potential for a prison sentence.
During the court hearing at Basildon Magistrates’ Court, it was revealed that Ziobryte was driving a car that collided with an e-scooter. The mother of the deceased siblings, Emma Casselden, paid a heartfelt tribute to her children, emphasizing Roman’s altruistic nature and Darcie’s artistic talents.
Prosecutor Rohini Majumdar detailed the events leading to the tragic collision, mentioning that Ziobryte left the scene after the accident without contacting the authorities. CCTV footage captured her actions as she failed to return to the scene or inform the police.
In a subsequent update, Essex Police stated that no offenses related to the collision’s cause were identified during their investigation. Despite initial suspicions, a woman arrested for dangerous driving in connection to the incident will not face further charges.
Ziobryte, visibly shaken, pleaded guilty to failing to stop at the scene of a road accident. Magistrates warned her of the possibility of imprisonment, with sentencing set for May following the production of a pre-sentence report by probation services.
