Iran has reportedly deployed numerous drones to target commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran. A US official disclosed that the drones, launched by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), were intercepted and eliminated by US forces before posing a threat to shipping or American personnel in the region.
According to NBC News, the IRGC has been conducting nightly drone launches since the electronic agreement was finalized. Iranian state media hailed the diplomatic progress with the US as a major victory for Tehran, particularly after Donald Trump announced a peace deal on Sunday.
State broadcaster Network News (Khabar TV) proclaimed that Iran had effectively compelled its adversaries to end the prolonged conflict, viewing it as a triumph for the Islamic Republic. The channel broadcasted a statement declaring, “The Islamic Republic of Iran has officially forced the American-Zionist enemy to end the war on all fronts.”
In response to Trump’s announcement of finalized negotiations and the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the US President shared on Truth Social, “The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
Pakistan has indicated that the agreement is set to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday. While the full details of the agreement have not been publicly disclosed by Washington or Tehran, Iranian state media has released information on a draft 14-point memorandum of understanding.
Reportedly, the proposed deal includes lifting the US naval blockade within 30 days and reopening the Strait of Hormuz during the same period under Iran’s management. The strait is a crucial shipping route globally, particularly for energy supplies.
Trump has praised the agreement as a significant diplomatic achievement, emphasizing that it will restore oil flow in the region and address international concerns about trade and energy security. He reiterated that the breakthrough would allow oil shipments to resume without hindrance, asserting that “oil will flow” worldwide once again.
More details of the accord are expected to surface ahead of the scheduled signing ceremony later this week.
