“Referee Assaulted in Sunday League Dispute”

Date:

A man assaulted a Sunday league referee due to disagreement with his decisions on the field. The attacker, identified as Daniel Marks, displayed extreme anger and physically attacked the referee, Peter Williams, causing him to lose consciousness and struggle to breathe during the altercation in Paddock Wood, Kent.

Peter Williams, a retired police officer, suffered both physical and psychological harm, including a neck injury. Following a legal hearing at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court, Marks was fined £1,125 and ordered to compensate Mr. Williams with £1,100 for the damages caused.

Marks, a father, confessed to the assault that occurred after a West Kent Sunday League match between Insulators FC and Dormansland Rockets in February 2023. Dissatisfied with the refereeing decisions, Marks acted violently towards Mr. Williams at the end of the game.

During the recent court session, DJ Claire Luxford mentioned the physical and psychological impact on Mr. Williams, urging Marks to refrain from contacting him and to leave any venue where Mr. Williams is officiating a football match. Consequently, Mr. Williams decided to stop refereeing adult games and now focuses on officiating youth matches due to the traumatic experience.

Prosecutor Vicky McGrady described the assault as a result of Marks’ discontent with the game’s outcome and refereeing decisions. Marks admitted his anger clouded his judgment, leading to the regrettable incident. His defense lawyer, Hannah Mirza, emphasized Marks’ remorse and stated that his behavior was uncharacteristic and a one-time occurrence.
