In a disturbing incident, a man pretending to be a taxi driver sexually assaulted a woman after gaining entry into her home following a night out in Sheffield in spring 2025. The victim, who had left her friend at a nightclub, believed she was getting into a legitimate taxi when Shabir Sultani assured her he would take her home. Despite declining his offer of vodka during the ride, she found herself being followed into her residence by Sultani, who then forced his way in and proceeded to assault her, despite her protests.
Sultani’s actions were captured on CCTV and through automatic number plate recognition technology, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges of rape and sexual assault. Following a trial at Derby Crown Court, the 27-year-old was convicted and recently sentenced to 13 years in prison, with an additional seven years for being deemed dangerous. Additionally, he was given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, a restraining order preventing contact with the victim, and was mandated to register as a sex offender.
Detective Beth Waite, who led the investigation, praised the victim for her bravery in coming forward and assisting in bringing Sultani to justice. She emphasized the lasting impact such incidents can have on victims but expressed hope that knowing the perpetrator is incarcerated will bring some peace. Derbyshire Police have urged anyone who has experienced similar crimes to report them, assuring support without judgement throughout the process.
