“Measles Resurgence: Victorian-Era Disease Spreads in UK”

Date:

A disease from the Victorian era, previously eradicated in the UK, has resurfaced in 50 council areas according to a newly released map that highlights regions with low vaccine coverage where the disease is quickly spreading.

Laboratory tests have confirmed cases of measles in all parts of England, primarily affecting children under 10, as reported by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Enfield in London stands out as the epicenter of the current outbreak, with 80 confirmed cases this year, including 35 new cases since February.

Enfield exhibits one of the lowest vaccination rates nationwide, with approximately one in three children not protected by the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. Data reveals that only 64.3% of Enfield’s children had received both MMR doses by their fifth birthday, falling short of the 95% target coverage rate recommended.

With at least 10 confirmed cases, 50 council areas have reported measles infections, with three areas surpassing the threshold, all characterized by low vaccine uptake rates. Besides Enfield, Birmingham has recorded 43 cases, including 19 new cases since February, while Haringey in London saw 15 cases, neighboring Enfield.

Vaccine coverage rates in Birmingham show that 75.5% of five-year-olds have received both MMR doses, while in Haringey, only 65.0% of young children are fully protected. The UK lost its measles elimination status in January, with outbreaks resurging in 2023 and escalating throughout 2024, resulting in 2,911 confirmed cases that year, the highest since 2012.

Despite a decline in measles cases from the 2024 peak, the virus has re-established endemic transmission, leading to the UK losing its elimination status. As of March 9 this year, 235 cases have been reported, predominantly affecting unvaccinated children under 10. The UKHSA attributes the resurgence of measles to declining vaccination rates, reaching a ten-year low for MMR uptake.

In England, 91.8% of five-year-olds received one MMR dose last summer, with 83.7% fully protected by both doses. However, areas like Enfield, Birmingham, and Haringey exhibit significantly lower vaccine uptake rates, emphasizing the importance of achieving a 95% coverage rate for herd immunity against measles.

The MMR jab has been replaced by the MMRV vaccine this year, providing protection against measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox. Dr. Yimmy Chow, UK Health Security Agency’s London Region Deputy Director, emphasized the critical need for vaccination, highlighting the severe risks associated with measles and urging parents to ensure their children are up-to-date with vaccinations.

Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, red eyes, and a rash, potentially leading to severe complications if not properly managed. Historically prevalent during the Victorian era, measles remains a serious public health concern, particularly for vulnerable populations like infants and individuals with weakened immune systems.
