UK Braces for Weekend Snow Showers & Cooler Temperatures

Date:

Snow is expected to make an appearance in certain regions of the UK over the upcoming weekend, as stated by the Met Office. Following a sunny Saturday with temperatures in the mid-to-high teens due to high pressure, a cooler period is anticipated.

On Saturday, Manchester and Edinburgh could see temperatures of 16C and 15C respectively, while Bristol and London are forecasted to reach highs of 15C and 14C throughout the weekend. Conversely, cities in southern Europe like Athens and Madrid are likely to experience cooler temperatures of 12C and 13C on Saturday before a slight increase on Sunday.

Starting from Sunday, a band of cloud and occasional rain will move southeast across the UK, leading to sunny intervals and scattered showers in the northern regions, with chances of some snow showers.

According to Met Office Chief Forecaster Steve Willington, while the initial period will bring warm sunshine, colder spells and wintry showers in March are not uncommon. Moving into the following week, a shift to a cooler northwesterly flow is expected, resulting in lower temperatures and more unsettled weather, including hill snow in the north and gusty winds at times, which is typical for this time of year.

BBC Weather reports that on Sunday, the north will be cloudy and breezy with light rain dissipating, while the south will begin with bright spells and areas of low cloud and fog, becoming cloudier later.

Looking ahead to early next week, a more mobile Atlantic pattern is anticipated, bringing rain to northern and western areas on Monday and Tuesday, potentially turning to snow over Scottish mountains. Stronger winds are expected in the north, with a possibility of coastal gales.

By Wednesday, a cooler and more unstable north-to-northwesterly flow will bring frequent showers, some heavy and wintry over higher ground, with potential snowfall even at lower levels in the north later in the day. Temperatures are projected to be close to or slightly below average.

Towards the end of the week, a build-up of higher pressure from the west is expected to reduce showers and ease winds, although temperatures are likely to remain on the cooler side, with a chance of overnight frost.
