The owner of a well-known London pub has decided to prohibit children from entering the establishment due to what he perceives as misuse of the pub as a daycare center by “entitled parents.”
The Kenton Arms in Hackney will now only admit individuals over the age of 18, following complaints from patrons online about disruptive behavior from children, including unruly behavior and crying babies.
Initially, the pub imposed a 5 pm curfew for children in an effort to address the issue. However, the landlord, Egil Johansen, ultimately made the decision to ban all children from the premises, citing a lack of parental supervision as the primary reason for the new policy.
The management of the pub clarified that the decision was not a reflection on children themselves but rather on the need for adequate supervision in a busy environment. They emphasized their inability to take responsibility for other people’s children and highlighted persistent issues despite clear warnings and reminders.
In response to the ban, the pub also shared images of their “supervise your children” signs, which are no longer necessary with the new policy in place.
The move to exclude children has generated mixed reactions among locals and regulars. While some, like Ross Kerslake, support the decision, citing safety concerns, others, such as Martin Hughes, agree that it is necessary due to inadequate parenting.
However, not all patrons are in favor of the new rule. Ross Stout expressed disappointment that he can no longer bring his well-behaved four-year-old to the pub. This is not the first time the landlord has expressed frustration with children’s behavior at the pub, emphasizing that it is not a playground but a place for adults.
While UK law allows children in pubs at the owner’s discretion, the Kenton Arms has joined a growing number of establishments opting for an adult-only environment to maintain a relaxed atmosphere.
