“Widow of British Billionaire Lynch Faces £920M Financial Blow”

Date:

The widow of Mike Lynch, a British billionaire, is facing financial peril as the estate of the deceased entrepreneur has been instructed to pay around £920 million in damages related to the sale of his company. The High Court ruled in favor of Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, awarding damages and interest stemming from the £8.2 billion acquisition of Lynch’s firm Autonomy in 2011. Tragically, Lynch, aged 59, and his daughter lost their lives in a yacht accident off the coast of Sicily in August 2024.

Expressing disappointment, Lynch’s family intends to appeal the High Court decision, believing it is in the interest of justice. They argue that HP’s (HPE’s) damages claim of five billion dollars has been proven to be greatly inflated. The court judgment criticized the exaggeration as baseless and condemned the misleading tactics employed by HP, stating that the damage to Autonomy was a consequence of HP’s own actions and oversights, not any misconduct by Autonomy.

Lynch had been embroiled in a legal battle with HP over an estimated £3.8 billion after the company’s acquisition of Autonomy. Despite being acquitted of criminal charges in the US in June 2024, Lynch continued to face the lawsuit brought by Hewlett-Packard until his passing the same year. His wife, Angela Bacares, who survived the yacht incident, is now confronted with legal claims on her late husband’s assets, while her daughter Hannah tragically perished in the accident.

A spokesperson for Hewlett-Packard expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, highlighting the denial of the estate’s appeal request as a step toward resolving the dispute. It remains uncertain whether Hewlett-Packard will pursue additional damages against Ms. Bacares, who also faces legal action from the yacht builder responsible for the ill-fated ship that sank, seeking a £400 million claim against her holding company, Revtom.

Following the tragic incident that claimed seven lives, an investigation has been launched by Italian authorities, focusing on the conduct of the ship’s captain, James Cutfield, engineer Tim Parker Eaton, and watchman Mathew Griffiths, all of whom deny any wrongdoing.
