A mother who has dedicated a significant portion of her young son’s life to advocating for his necessary medical care has shared her frustrating journey, urging parents to trust their instincts when advocating for their children.
Jordan Penfold, aged 30, has been tirelessly supporting her 20-month-old son, Louie-James, who has spent the majority of his young life shuttling between various hospitals due to respiratory issues. Despite multiple visits to the local hospital and being prescribed antibiotics for what was believed to be viral or chest infections, Louie continued to struggle with his oxygen levels.
Following conflicting advice on administering oxygen at home, Jordan found herself grappling with the responsibility of deciding when to use supplemental oxygen for Louie. The local hospital’s guidance was later deemed dangerous, leading Jordan to seek better care for her son.
After facing inadequate support from the local hospital, Jordan persisted in seeking the care Louie needed. Eventually, Louie was transferred to the Evelina Children’s Hospital in London, where he was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, tracheomalacia, and a bacterial lung infection, necessitating high dependency care.
The family established a GoFundMe page to cover the expenses of Louie’s prolonged hospital stay, with any excess funds intended for the hospital. While Louie remains in hospital, Jordan expressed the challenges of being away from her other children and emphasized the importance of parental advocacy in navigating the healthcare system.
Despite his health challenges, Louie remains a cheerful and resilient child, bringing positivity to those around him. Jordan’s message to parents facing similar struggles is to trust their instincts, persist in seeking answers, and not hesitate to seek a second opinion when needed.
