“UK Set for Snow, Frost & Strong Winds Next Week”

Date:

Recent weather maps indicate that parts of the United Kingdom are likely to experience snow flurries, frost, and strong winds for about a 60-hour period starting next week.

According to the ECMWF weather model, the UK is expected to face a significant cold spell starting on Sunday, April 5. Wintry conditions are predicted to commence on Saturday evening in Scotland and northern England, particularly over the Pennines, before spreading southwards early on Sunday.

By midday on Sunday, regions in northern England including Northumberland, Cumbria, and Durham could see some snow, with a few centimeters likely to accumulate in certain areas. Parts of North and West Yorkshire might also experience light snow on higher terrain, albeit in smaller amounts.

Moving southward, areas like Staffordshire, Greater Manchester, and the West Midlands may see snow primarily on elevated areas, while much of southern England is expected to remain snow-free. However, clear skies could lead to frost formation overnight and in the morning in counties such as Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire, and Kent.

The weather maps suggest that Scotland might encounter blizzard-like conditions, especially in the Highlands, Aberdeenshire, and Angus, where significant snow accumulations are likely. Parts of Northern Ireland, particularly in County Antrim and County Down, could also experience snow flurries, while Wales is forecasted to have frost, with a possibility of light snow on elevated ground.

Following the weekend, wintry conditions are expected to persist mainly in the northwest until the morning of Tuesday, April 7. The Met Office anticipates low-pressure systems moving in, bringing strong winds and showers or longer periods of rain starting from Friday, April 3.

The Met Office reports that the UK’s weather from Tuesday, March 31, to Thursday, April 2, will be changeable, with chances of drier and brighter intervals, particularly in the southeast. Conditions are expected to turn cooler again by Thursday.

In its extended UK forecast from April 3 to April 12, the Met Office indicates a likely northwest to southeast split. The northwest is expected to experience more unsettled weather, with low-pressure systems bringing strong winds and showers or longer periods of rain intermittently. Conversely, the southeast is likely to have more settled and drier conditions due to higher pressure influence. Overall temperatures are projected to be near normal or slightly above, with potential for overnight frost.
