“Cicada Variant Threatens UK, Children at Higher Risk”

Date:

A novel Covid strain linked to a tropical insect is expected to dominate in the UK and potentially impact children more significantly, according to a leading expert. Named the Cicada variant, scientifically known as BA.3.2, it exhibits about 75 genetic alterations in its spike protein, crucial for the virus’s cell entry. Researchers indicate that Cicada spreads faster than other variants, with emerging data suggesting a higher transmission rate among children lacking Covid immunity, raising concerns about a potential new outbreak.

Professor Ravi Gupta from Cambridge University, a key advisor to the UK government throughout the pandemic, highlighted the distinctiveness of this new variant compared to previously encountered Covid strains. The variant, originating from the Omicron variant in 2021 and first identified in South Africa in 2024 before disappearing, likely acquired numerous mutations due to prolonged incubation in a single immunocompromised patient.

Following a dormancy period, the Cicada variant has now spread to 23 countries, including the US, where it has been detected in wastewater samples from 29 states. Although global data indicates its presence as of February, further dissemination may have occurred since then.

Symptoms associated with the Cicada variant resemble those of recent strains, encompassing sore throat, cough, congestion, fatigue, headache, and fever. Additionally, some individuals have reported gastrointestinal issues like nausea or diarrhea, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The mutations in Cicada’s spike protein delay antibody recognition of the virus, potentially leading to faster spread without clear evidence of increased severity. Professor Gupta emphasized that while the elderly and immunocompromised individuals face higher risks, vaccines should mitigate severe complications for most people.

Recent reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show an escalating prevalence of BA.3.2 in Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands, constituting approximately 30% of reported Covid-19 sequences. However, no substantial surge in Covid cases has been observed in these regions compared to previous years.

Although current vaccines may exhibit reduced efficacy against Cicada, vaccination remains a crucial defense against severe illness. Data suggests that Long Covid persists in around 3 out of 100 cases, underscoring the importance of preventive measures.

The NHS website advises that eligible individuals will be contacted for free vaccinations, typically offered in spring and early winter. Those uncertain about their eligibility are encouraged to consult their General Practitioner (GP).

For those ineligible for NHS-provided boosters, Covid-19 vaccines are available for purchase at High Street pharmacies for approximately £75 to £100.
