“Car Plows Into Derby Crowd: 7 Injured, Suspect in Custody”

Date:

In Derby, a car driver crashed into a crowd, injuring seven individuals after mounting the pavement outside a busy bar. Calum Green, the bar owner, described the incident as “horrific,” occurring right outside his establishment, Bishop Blaise on Friar Gate. Staff members rushed to aid the injured upon hearing the commotion.

A 36-year-old male, of Indian descent, is being questioned by the police on suspicion of attempted murder. Witnesses reported the vehicle mounting the pavement, leaving locals shocked. Derby City Council, led by Nadine Peatfield, announced a traffic ban on the street to ensure public safety during the Easter weekend.

The council has established a recovery group to reassure the community, emphasizing that the incident was isolated. Authorities stopped the suspect seven minutes after the incident, two miles away. Two injured individuals have been discharged from the hospital.

Mayor Claire Ward urged local communities and agencies to support those affected, noting the release of two more individuals from the hospital. The 36-year-old suspect is under custody for further questioning, with counter-terrorism police involved as a standard procedure.

Although investigations are ongoing, the police have not categorized the incident as terrorism and assured the public of no immediate threat. The business cordon around the scene is expected to be lifted soon.
