“Wiltshire homeowner faces planning dispute over six-foot fence”

Date:

A homeowner in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, Marcus Brown, is facing a planning dispute over an unauthorized six-foot high fence he constructed without the necessary planning permission. Despite branding the objection as ‘baffling’ and attributing it to jealousy, he has submitted a retrospective application to legitimize the fence.

While some residents have supported Marcus, others have criticized the fence, describing it as a disruptive and visually prominent feature that clashes with the established streetscape. The decision on whether the fence can remain now rests with Wiltshire Council.

Marcus expressed surprise at the escalated dispute, stating that he was unaware of the regulations regarding fence height near highways. In contrast, objector James Sutherland argued that the fence detracts from the street’s character and appearance, violating local planning policies.

Marcus emphasized that the fence was intended to improve the property for his daughter and enhance the neighborhood. Despite receiving positive feedback from some neighbors, he lamented the exaggerated impact of the objection and expressed a desire for the issue to be resolved amicably.

The retrospective application, aimed at regularizing the existing fence, was submitted on March 5. The applicants maintain that the fence does not encroach on the highway and serves to define the property boundary, enhancing the area by improving sightlines and pedestrian pathways.

Residents like Brian Hobday and his wife Adrienne voiced approval for the development, praising the improved visibility and aesthetics. Another neighbor, Steve, highlighted the privacy benefits of the fence for families with children.

The final decision on the fate of the fence will be made by the council at a later date.
