Funeral Fraud Perpetrator Infuriates Families in Court

Date:

Families expressed their anger towards Robert Bush, a funeral fraud perpetrator, as he swiftly left the court after admitting guilt. Karen Dry, one of the victims, questioned how he could leave freely despite his monstrous acts, while others labeled him as fortunate and a wicked individual.

Bush, aged 48, confessed to 30 charges of improperly handling bodies at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, along with theft from 12 charities including the Salvation Army and Macmillan Cancer Support. He previously pleaded guilty to fraud and fraudulent trading charges involving families, including grieving parents who lost a child. Families were given questionable ashes, adding to their distress.

As Bush hurriedly exited the court, accompanied by police and followed by shouting victims, calls for a thorough investigation and stricter regulations in the funeral industry emerged. Karen Dry, echoing the sentiments of many affected families, likened Bush to a sinister figure found in every city.

The victims, standing together outside the court, expressed their shock at the appalling discoveries within the funeral director’s premises. They emphasized the emotional turmoil caused by the uncertainty of having the correct ashes and the need for DNA testing for identification, leading to additional distress for families.

With 35 bodies and 67 sets of ashes discovered at Bush’s location in Hull, the prosecution linked 30 bodies to charges, with efforts made to contact families through heir hunters. Bush’s admission to preventing lawful burials and theft from various charities, dating back to 2017, further highlighted his deceptive practices and exploitation of vulnerable families.

Following a police raid initiated due to concerns for deceased individuals’ care, a surge of calls from worried families regarding their loved ones’ ashes prompted a widespread investigation. The events surrounding Bush’s actions underscore the necessity for legal reforms to prevent such deceitful practices and ensure the proper handling of cremated remains.
