A newborn baby entered the world unexpectedly on a flight bound for Italy as the mother went into labor prematurely. The incident occurred shortly after departure from Dakar, Senegal, on an ITA Airways flight, prompting cabin crew to assist in the onboard delivery. With the help of a doctor and a nurse among the passengers, an ad hoc birthing space was arranged in the gallery near the exit for the seven-month pregnant woman.
The airline, ITA Airways, confirmed that a passenger gave birth on flight AZ855 from Dakar to Rome Fiumicino on the night of April 29. Witness Sandro Pisu, aged 58, recounted the surprise of the event, noting the swift birth of the baby boy received with cheers from fellow passengers. The aircraft returned to Blaise Diagne Airport in Dakar to transfer the mother and newborn to a hospital for evaluation.
In a statement shared on Facebook, ITA Airways celebrated the unexpected joy of welcoming the first baby born aboard their aircraft. The crew, along with the assisting doctor and nurse, were commended for their professionalism in ensuring the well-being of the mother and the healthy newborn. The airline expressed best wishes for the baby’s future life filled with happiness.
This event follows a similar occurrence earlier in April when a baby was born on a flight from Jamaica to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The delivery took place on a Caribbean Airlines flight from Kingston, where both mother and newborn received necessary medical attention upon landing.
