Residents in a small Kent community are experiencing severe discomfort, including nausea, sleep disturbances, and eye irritation, due to a foul sewage odor originating from a nearby residential area. The issue in Chestfield, near Whitstable, is attributed to the Oxenden Park development where waste is being channeled through the estate and into the local sewer system and Swalecliffe Wastewater Treatment Works.
The malodor problem is exacerbated by low property occupancy rates, causing stagnant wastewater in the local pipelines. Celena Campbell, 71, and other locals have described the noxious smell as “absolutely horrendous,” impacting their mental and physical well-being. Despite attempts to address the issue with temporary fixes and treatment chemicals by developers Bellway, the odor persists.
Concerned residents, including Mandy Friend, organized a protest on April 12 to draw attention to the pervasive smell. Friend highlighted the challenges of managing the odor, which disrupt daily activities and social gatherings. Bellway has acknowledged the issue and assured residents of ongoing efforts to promptly resolve the situation and restore normal sewage flow through temporary measures.
Bellway’s spokesperson emphasized their commitment to addressing the problem promptly, working closely with technical teams and contractors to find a lasting solution. Residents are hopeful for a swift resolution to eliminate the distressing sewage smell that has plagued their community.
