“UK Investigates Online Suicide Kits Linked to Tragic Deaths”

Date:

A tragic incident has come to light as a young psychologist, Zara Afua Ampong-Appiah, took her own life after searching online for a substance associated with “suicide kits.” This revelation follows her untimely death last year, as confirmed by an inquest. Authorities from Scotland Yard are currently investigating five deaths in the UK that are linked to a seller of such kits from overseas.

The inquest disclosed that Ms. Ampong-Appiah, aged 30, was a promising postgraduate research student at the Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London. Despite her bright future, she began facing challenges with her mental health in February 2023, requiring time off work and medication for depression and anxiety as per her GP’s statement.

Following her passing in April 2025, a thorough examination of her digital devices revealed numerous searches related to a US pro-choice suicide website and the lethal substance often found in “suicide kits.” Her mother, Elly Oppong, expressed profound sorrow over her daughter’s unexpected death in an exclusive interview, emphasizing the lack of prior warning or signs of distress.

Ms. Ampong-Appiah’s case is part of an ongoing investigation by the Met Police concerning the purchase of lethal substances online from overseas. Toxicology tests indicated significantly elevated levels of two substances in her blood, consistent with the cause of death determined by the pathologist.

The tragic event has sparked discussions on mental health support and the legal implications surrounding the acquisition of “suicide kits” and lethal substances. It is illegal in the UK to assist or encourage suicide, including importing such items from abroad. The prevalence of similar cases underscores the need for stricter regulations and support mechanisms to prevent future tragedies.

As the community mourns the loss of individuals like Ms. Ampong-Appiah, it serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and the significance of seeking help during challenging times. If you or someone you know is struggling, organizations like the Samaritans provide valuable support and resources to those in need.
