An exceptionally skilled teenage girl tragically lost her life on a highway when the Ford Fiesta she was a passenger in experienced a breakdown and was subsequently struck by another vehicle.
Elise Thomas, aged 17, was travelling in the Fiesta when it was hit by another car after breaking down suddenly on the M1 motorway. The front tire of the Fiesta had worn out and detached, leading to the devastating collision while Elise and her two companions waited for help.
The impact caused the car to spin off the road, resulting in Elise sustaining critical injuries and one of her friends being severely injured. Details of the incident came to light during a trial at Hull Crown Court, where the driver of the other vehicle faced charges related to Elise’s death and the injuries caused to the other passenger due to careless driving on August 12, 2023.
Jeremy Barton, the prosecutor, revealed that the driver had set out from Dewsbury with her friends around 8:15 am to travel to Doncaster for a concert by The Vamps, a band they all admired. The group was traveling in a maroon or red Ford Fiesta.
Elise was seated in the front passenger seat, with the other passenger behind her in the rear nearside seat. As they joined the M1 at Junction 40, the car was overtaking a lorry when the Fiesta began making unusual noises and the front tire came off. The driver managed to bring the car to a stop in the third lane to assess the situation.
Despite efforts to warn approaching vehicles, a silver Vauxhall Corsa collided with the Fiesta within seconds of it stopping. The prosecution argued that the Corsa driver failed to notice the stationary vehicle due to inattention, leading to the tragic accident.
Following the collision, Elise and the other passenger were trapped inside the car before being rescued by bystanders and emergency services. Elise succumbed to her injuries in the hospital on August 18, 2023, while the second passenger suffered life-altering injuries.
CCTV footage captured the sequence of events, including the deterioration of the Fiesta’s tire and the subsequent collision. The defense suggested that the Corsa driver might have experienced a visual phenomenon that impaired his judgment of the situation.
The trial of the 51-year-old driver from Leeds was stopped midway, and he was acquitted of all charges. In their tribute after Elise’s passing, her family described her as a beautiful soul, an inspiration to others, and exceptionally talented in photography, with a particular passion for wildlife photography.
