“Experts Investigate Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship”

Date:

Health authorities reassure the public following the deaths of three individuals connected to a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship. The World Health Organization advises against travel restrictions despite the incident, as experts investigate the source of the virus transmission. Among the victims were a married couple and a British man currently in critical condition in South Africa.

The outbreak occurred on the MV Hondius, en route from Argentina to Cape Verde with 149 passengers and crew onboard. The 69-year-old British patient with a hantavirus variant was airlifted to Johannesburg and is now in stable but critical condition. The deaths are under investigation, with hantavirus suspected but not yet confirmed through lab tests.

Expert opinions suggest the possibility of the Andes strain of hantavirus being responsible for the outbreak. The cruise ship, which has been stationary off the coast of Cape Verde, reported two crew members, one British and one Dutch, with respiratory symptoms requiring urgent medical attention. No other cases have been identified among the 23 British nationals onboard.

Hantavirus, typically carried by rodents, can be transmitted to humans through inhaling particles from rodent droppings. Human-to-human transmission is rare, with severe illnesses like Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) and Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal syndrome (HFRS) associated with the virus. Treatment options focus on symptom management and supportive care as the immune system combats the infection.

While investigations continue, health experts emphasize the low risk of person-to-person transmission of hantavirus and the need for public calm. The current focus remains on identifying the source of exposure to rodents that led to the outbreak.
