A man is facing trial for allegedly killing his wife, a former Miss Switzerland finalist and beauty queen, by using various tools to harm her. The accused, Marc Rieben, expressed love for his late wife during the trial proceedings. Rieben, 43, is accused of murdering his wife in February 2024 and could receive a life sentence if convicted.
During the trial, Rieben tearfully claimed that his wife’s death was accidental and professed his deep love for her. He acknowledged his role in her demise and expressed remorse for the pain he caused his family. Despite admitting to the tragedy, he emphasized his love and hopes for a shared future with his wife.
Rieben admitted that their relationship had its challenges, with arguments being a significant issue. However, he highlighted their shared passion and the admiration he had for his wife’s success and ambitions. The couple had been undergoing counseling since 2018 to address their issues.
In a surprising turn, Rieben revealed in court that he had given a substantial amount of money to his children and his wife’s parents as a gesture of support. He expressed a desire for the funds to bring some positivity to their lives.
The trial, which commenced years after the incident, is expected to conclude on May 13. The prosecution alleges that the motivation behind the heinous act was Kristina’s request for a divorce, to which Rieben allegedly responded violently. Prosecutors claim that the husband inflicted severe harm on his wife, leading to her agonizing death.
Due to privacy laws in Switzerland, the individuals involved in the case are referred to as Thomas L and Ivana L in local media reports. The legal proceedings are ongoing.
