Following a significant relocation to Australia, a British expatriate has shared insights into five aspects often overlooked.
At 31 years old, Cat Scully sought a more balanced lifestyle and embraced outdoor living, prompting her courageous decision to leave Newcastle for Australia in 2021. After exploring Western Australia initially, Cat eventually settled in Perth, drawn to its relaxed atmosphere and varied scenery encompassing pristine beaches, rolling hills, and vibrant city surroundings.
Five years have passed since the momentous relocation, and Cat has comfortably settled into her new life, having obtained Australian citizenship. Together with her spouse, they enjoy beach evenings and weekend explorations of nearby areas.
However, transitioning to the opposite side of the world and revamping her routine presented challenges, with Cat highlighting unexpected aspects after making the leap across continents. In an interview with 1st Move International, experts in Australia relocations, Cat mentioned the shift towards becoming a morning person, a change she has embraced.
“Most of my social engagements now revolve around early mornings, meeting for a stroll, a beach swim, or breakfast at 7:30 or 8 am. Everyone is eager to begin their day promptly, usually before the temperatures rise,” she remarked.
Regarding the essential coffee for these early starts, a plethora of options exist, inadvertently transforming expats into discerning coffee enthusiasts. “Even the standard coffee establishments serve exceptional coffee, often at a fraction of UK prices. You quickly develop high expectations,” Cat disclosed.
Benefiting from Australia’s warm climate, avocados are abundant, a feature Cat appreciates in her new Australian life. “Avocados are ubiquitous here! They are frequently 2 for $5 (£2.65), large, and of excellent quality. Even groceries feel distinct; while some items are pricier, avocados are notably cheaper compared to the UK and are prevalent on many breakfast menus,” the 31-year-old noted.
Contrasting the dreary UK winters, Cat emphasized that those relocating seize the opportunity to enjoy evenings and weekends fully. “Post-work, it’s customary to head straight to the beach for sunset, dine outdoors, jog along the river, or spontaneously embark on weekend bush trips. Time is maximized in a different manner,” she emphasized.
Cat seems to have acclimated so well to her new lifestyle in Australia that memories of her UK life are fading. “I can barely recall the darkness at 4 pm in winter or the fast-paced UK lifestyle. Life feels more open-air
