A hotel in Manchester was evacuated following a “chemical” incident that prompted a significant police presence. The incident, which led to the closure of a section of Canal Street in Manchester’s Gay Village, was initiated by reports of a suspicious smell believed to be related to chemicals emanating from a hotel room.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported, and a man suspected to be the occupant of the room was taken into custody. As a precautionary measure, the hotel was cleared out while specialized teams investigated the material and conducted further inquiries. The emergency response included police, ambulance, and fire crews on the scene for investigations.
According to a spokesperson from the Greater Manchester Police, ongoing searches were being conducted in the hotel room on Canal Street due to the suspicious chemical smell. The statement emphasized the detainment of the room’s occupant for further investigation and reassured the public that efforts were being made to determine the circumstances of the incident.
Although a cordon remained in place on Canal Street, the police barrier on Sackville Street was removed, allowing normal traffic flow. Previously, Sackville Street had been cordoned off up to the junction with Brazil Street and Richmond Street.
