A man convicted of murder attempted to kill two fellow prisoners in separate high-security facilities, expressing frustration to officers about being housed with sex offenders. Duncan Heaton, 53, serving a life sentence for a murder in Hull, first attacked sex offender Andong Abong Ashu at HMP Full Sutton near York in May 2024. Later, at HMP Wakefield, he targeted fellow murderer David Minto in October of the following year.
In a recent hearing at Leeds Crown Court, Heaton received an additional 13 years on top of his existing minimum term for parole consideration. The judge noted that the attacks were driven by the victims’ status as sex offenders, criticizing Heaton’s misguided belief in his moral superiority.
The judge labeled Heaton as highly dangerous, expressing concerns that he might target another prisoner with a history of sexual offenses in the future. Despite Heaton’s plea for a whole-life order, the judge decided to impose a further life sentence with an additional 13-year minimum term.
Heaton, initially jailed for the murder of Keith Opray in Hull, had already served over a decade of his original sentence. The judge emphasized that Heaton’s potential release would be determined by the Parole Board.
During the incidents, Heaton used makeshift weapons to attack the victims, revealing a planned and premeditated intent. The court detailed Heaton’s violent actions in both prison settings, highlighting his dangerous behavior and lack of remorse.
Heaton’s defense lawyer mentioned his client’s desire to remain incarcerated due to feeling unfit for society. Currently held in isolation with restricted daily activities, Heaton’s violent tendencies and targeted attacks on sex offenders have raised serious concerns about his potential for future harm.
