Police responded to an incident near a sports center in Manchester this afternoon after receiving reports of a man wielding a knife. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a man was taken into custody on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, possessing a bladed weapon, and having class B drugs. During the police intervention, an officer was also assaulted.
A significant police presence remains at Denmark Road Sports Centre, with Denmark Road and nearby Cecil Street cordoned off. The authorities stated that the incident occurred around 4:55 pm, leading to the arrest of the individual involved. The arrested man is currently under questioning while facing multiple charges.
Eyewitness Simon Bailey described the scene as officers attended to the injured officer. Approximately 30 officers were present, securing the area. Images captured at the location show numerous police vehicles on site. The public is advised to steer clear of the area, and drivers are encouraged to seek alternative routes if possible.
