A man pretending to be seriously ill in order to avoid facing charges for child abuse was exposed by his own home security cameras. John Siddell, aged 41, resorted to using a wheelchair to evade justice during a police investigation into his sexual crimes against three boys at Leicester Crown Court. However, his deception began to crumble when evidence surfaced of him attending social events and walking unaided.
His brother, James Siddell, aged 44, collaborated in upholding the false narrative about John’s health, even influencing psychiatrists to believe he was unfit to stand trial. John Siddell committed sexual offenses against boys under the age of 14 between 2018 and 2021.
Following legal proceedings, John was sentenced to 15 years in prison with an additional two-year extended term, while his brother received a two-year and nine-month prison sentence. The presiding judge, Keith Raynor, condemned the brothers’ actions as “scheming and devious,” stating that they obstructed the course of justice by misrepresenting John’s mental and physical condition.
According to prosecutor Claudia James, the brothers led a dual life that was not as covert as they believed, with their active social presence documented on social media and home surveillance footage. Evidence revealed instances where John appeared physically impaired publicly but was captured walking unassisted and engaging in social activities, undermining his claimed disabilities.
The court heard testimonies that contradicted John Siddell’s alleged health conditions, including instances where he was seen communicating normally and engaging in various activities. Despite efforts to manipulate the legal system, assessments concluded that John was fit to face trial.
Both brothers eventually admitted to perverting the course of justice over a period extending from November 2021 to August 2025. The victims, who remain anonymous, expressed ongoing struggles from the abuse inflicted upon them.
Notably, the defendants failed to attend their sentencing hearing, further illustrating their disregard for accountability. John Siddell’s defense attorney highlighted his client’s vulnerabilities, citing medical conditions, while James Siddell’s legal representative emphasized their disadvantaged family background.
The Crown Prosecution Service representative, Nicola Potts, emphasized the impact on the victims, condemning John Siddell’s actions as a cruel manipulation that robbed the victims of their childhood and denouncing the brothers’ deceitful behavior.
