A young man who was abducted by his mother at the age of 11 and taken on an off-grid journey across Europe has recently reconnected with her upon his return to the UK in 2023. Alex Batty, now 20 years old, shared that he has embraced fatherhood, welcoming a baby girl as he adjusts to a more conventional lifestyle.
Initially reported missing by his grandmother Susan Caruana in 2017, Alex’s mother and grandfather had taken him while vacationing in Spain before relocating to France. His mother, Melanie, not his legal guardian, was swayed by conspiracy theories, instructing him to discard his passport. During this time, they lived off the grid, and Alex missed out on formal education.
In a documentary titled “Kidnapped By My Mum” aired by BBC, Alex recounts his experiences and retraces the path of their travels through Spain and France. Revisiting places where he and his family were known, Alex’s grandmother expresses the emotional turmoil of fearing she might never see him again.
Reflecting on his years in isolation, including living in a tent, enduring meager meals, and performing physical labor for income, Alex embarked on this journey to gain insight into his mother’s motivations and others’ perceptions of their situation, aiming to avoid demonizing her.
Acknowledging the complexity of his relationship with his mother and the grievances stemming from his unconventional upbringing, Alex has found a new perspective through interactions with locals in Spain and France. The process of creating the documentary prompted him to reach out to his mother once more.
During the documentary, Alex delves into why bystanders did not intervene to assist him and learns that some did alert authorities in France, but aid never materialized. The program sheds light on Melanie’s descent into subscribing to anti-government conspiracy theories, leading to their nomadic lifestyle.
Despite the challenges faced during their secluded existence, Alex recalls moments of feeling like a character in a spy movie, following his mother’s instructions to evade detection by discarding his phone and passport. Ultimately, in 2023, Alex decided to leave this life behind, realizing the importance of pursuing a conventional education.
After escaping and seeking help from local authorities, Alex’s story garnered global attention before he reunited with his grandmother in Oldham. The police investigation into the abduction was eventually closed, allowing Alex to move forward from years of anxiety and uncertainty.
While Alex’s mother, Melanie Batty, and grandfather, David Batty, declined to address the allegations presented in the documentary, Alex has found closure and a renewed sense of freedom after his tumultuous journey.
