A 66-year-old former primary school teacher, John Field, has been permanently barred from teaching due to his involvement in downloading illicit images of young children from the dark web. Field, who previously worked at Woodgate Primary School in Bartley Green, Birmingham, admitted to authorities that he had been searching for and viewing sexual images of female children aged as young as five for approximately five years.
Field was convicted in October 2024 after confessing to three counts of possessing indecent photographs of children. Police investigations revealed that he had downloaded a total of 29 indecent images, including eight Category A (the most severe), five Category B, and 16 Category C images.
Following his sentencing in January 2025 to a 16-month suspended imprisonment and a 10-year registration as a sex offender, Field faced further repercussions when the Teachers Regulation Agency’s professional conduct panel reviewed his case. The panel, considering Field’s admission of guilt and his statements to detectives regarding his behavior, concluded that he lacked substantial remorse and insight into the impact of his actions on the victims.
Despite Field’s claims of undergoing courses to address his behavior, the panel found insufficient evidence to support his rehabilitation efforts. Decision maker Stuart Blomfield emphasized the seriousness of Field’s actions, highlighting the prolonged duration of his offenses, the severity of the material involved, and the ages of the victims depicted in the images.
As a result, Field has been permanently banned from teaching, with Blomfield stating that he cannot seek reinstatement in any educational institution in England due to the gravity of his actions and lack of demonstrated remorse and understanding of the harm caused.
