“Black Market Alert: 65K+ Fake Hair-Loss Meds Seized”

Date:

In the past five years, officials have confiscated close to 70,000 illegal hair-loss medications, according to alarming data.

Border Force agents seized 65,194 counterfeit drugs between 2021 and 2026, with nearly a quarter intercepted just last year. These concerning figures, acquired through Freedom of Information laws from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), coincide with the monthly prescription of baldness medications to almost half a million Britons.

Anastasia Lesnikova, an expert in aesthetics products who compiled the data, cautioned that the soaring demand is fueling a thriving black market. She expressed concern that while tens of thousands of illicit hair-loss medication doses are being stopped before reaching consumers, there may be many more circulating undetected.

The majority of seized hair-loss drugs are found at the border due to their lack of authorization for sale in the UK and potential inclusion of harmful substances. Nearly all tablets available in the country are prescription-only and necessitate evaluation by a healthcare provider. The MHRA is encouraging both medical professionals and patients to report suspected illegal medications and adverse reactions through the agency’s Yellow Card scheme.

According to the government’s Drug Safety Update, approximately 14 to 16 percent of British men use hair-loss medications, with around 400,000 private prescriptions issued monthly. Since balding is considered a cosmetic concern, NHS does not provide treatment. Notably, celebrities such as Elon Musk, Pete Davidson, and Joe Rogan have reportedly utilized these medications.

Unlicensed hair-loss pills can lead to severe health complications. For instance, some men taking dutasteride, a drug for hair loss, reported experiencing erectile dysfunction and suicidal thoughts last year. Influencers on platforms like TikTok often promote these medications, showcasing regrowth results that garner millions of views.

The recent MHRA findings include the confiscation of millions of illegal medicines valued at approximately £4.6 million. Additionally, officials uncovered over 130,000 doses of unauthorized steroids and drugs being distributed through mail order channels.
