“Tragic Loss in Maldives: Military Diver Dies in Italian Divers Search”

Date:

A tragic incident occurred during a search for four missing Italian divers who were exploring underwater caves in the Maldives. It was reported that a military diver lost his life during the operation to locate the missing individuals.

According to Italy’s foreign ministry, a total of five Italian divers are believed to have perished while exploring a cave approximately 50 meters deep in Vaavu Atoll in the Maldives. The standard recreational diving limit in the Maldives is set at 30 meters.

Mohamed Mahudhee, a member of the Maldivian National Defence Force, passed away due to underwater decompression sickness after being taken to a hospital in the capital, as confirmed by Maldives presidential spokesman Mohammed Hussain Shareef. The challenging nature of the mission was highlighted by Shareef, who mentioned the team’s difficulties in executing the rescue plan.

Mahudhee was among the team members who briefed Maldives president Mohamed Muizzu on the rescue strategy during his visit to the search area. Unfavorable weather conditions have repeatedly obstructed the recovery efforts.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressed the commitment to repatriate the victims. The Italian Ministry stated its collaboration with Divers Alert Network to assist in recovery operations and repatriation of the deceased.

The identities of the victims have been disclosed by the Maldivian government as Monica Montefalcone, Giorgia Sommacal, Federico Gualtieri, Muriel Oddenino, and Gianluca Benedetti. The bodies of Monica Montefalcone, Giorgia Sommacal, Federico Gualtieri, and Muriel Oddenino are yet to be recovered.

Monica Montefalcone and Muriel Oddenino were in the Maldives for an official scientific mission related to marine ecology and climate change research, as stated by the University of Genoa. However, the fatal diving incident occurred during private activities not linked to their research.

Cave diving is acknowledged as a complex and perilous undertaking that necessitates specialized training, equipment, and adherence to stringent safety protocols. Risks are significantly heightened in environments where divers cannot ascend directly and under challenging conditions, increasing the likelihood of disorientation and reduced visibility.

Diving to a depth of 50 meters surpasses the recommended recreational diving limit set by most scuba certifying agencies, indicating technical diving that requires advanced training and gear. Authorities suspect that the remaining missing divers may have entered the cave where Gianluca Benedetti’s body was discovered.

Italian officials announced the participation of two experts in deep-sea and cave rescue operations to aid in the recovery process. The Italian embassy in Colombo is providing support to those onboard the vessel Duke of York, where around 20 other Italian divers were safely accommodated.

The Maldives tourism ministry has temporarily suspended the operating license of the Duke of York pending further investigation. Recovery teams have explored two of the three chambers inside the cave, with plans to investigate the third chamber on the following day.

Italian authorities are liaising with the families of the victims to offer assistance during this challenging time.
