A tragic incident unfolded at Davis Station in Boston when Steven McCluskey, a 40-year-old father of two, lost his balance on an escalator in the early hours of February 27. Shocking video footage released by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) revealed that over a dozen people walked past McCluskey without offering assistance as he struggled.
Witnesses observed McCluskey losing his balance at the bottom of the escalator, with his coat becoming entangled in the machinery. Despite his attempts to free himself by unzipping his coat, he was unsuccessful. As the fabric tightened around his neck, McCluskey experienced difficulty breathing and eventually collapsed, remaining motionless on the stairway.
Emergency services arrived at the scene, with medics and firefighters working to free McCluskey from the escalator. Tragically, McCluskey was pronounced unresponsive and later succumbed to his injuries on March 9 after being in a coma for ten days. His family described him as a devoted father to his two sons and a skilled carpenter who took pride in his work.
The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office will conduct an investigation into the incident, and McCluskey’s family has called on the MBTA to take responsibility for his untimely death.
