Nineteen individuals have been sentenced to a total of 286 years in prison for the “extremely disturbing” rape and sexual exploitation of “vulnerable girls”. The crimes, which occurred between 1995 and 2003, primarily took place in Dewsbury and Batley, West Yorkshire, targeting three girls, one of whom was only 12 years old at the time.
Legal proceedings commenced at Leeds Crown Court in July 2023, involving six separate trials. The final trial concluded in September 2024, with the last suspect receiving sentencing in 2025. Recently, West Yorkshire Police announced the lifting of reporting restrictions put in place to uphold the fairness and integrity of the court process.
Among those convicted is Donna Lynn, aged 45, from Cleckheaton, who received a three-year sentence for controlling prostitution. Detective Chief Inspector Rob Stevens of Kirklees District Police described the investigation as a significant effort to address the severe sexual abuse endured by vulnerable girls in Kirklees at the hands of numerous sexual offenders.
Juries heard distressing accounts of the victims’ mistreatment over nearly a two-year period, including repeated sexual assaults, administration of Class A drugs, and the victims being treated as mere objects for the pleasure of heartless predators. Det Ch Insp Stevens emphasized the severity of the sentences handed down, such as Azam’s 20-year term for ten counts of rape, highlighting the depravity of the offenders and the suffering inflicted on the victims.
The detective praised the courage of the victims for coming forward, testifying during lengthy trials, and expressed hope that they can take pride in seeking justice and seeing the perpetrators removed from society. West Yorkshire Police’s ‘When You Are Ready’ campaign offers information on reporting historical child sexual exploitation and abuse, as well as available support services.
