“Families Pressured to Buy Fake Football Shirts Amid Soaring Prices”

Date:

British families are feeling pressured to purchase fake football shirts due to the high prices of official kits, according to the executive chairman of Iceland. Lord Richard Walker, appointed as the government’s cost of living tsar, expressed concerns in the House of Lords about the rising costs of licensed merchandise leading parents towards counterfeit options, which are often produced in unregulated sweatshops and not tested for safety.

He called for government intervention to urge the Football Association and kit-makers to lower prices, citing the example of replica England kits priced at nearly £90 ahead of the upcoming World Cup. In response, Sports minister Baroness Twycross acknowledged the concerns over costs but stated that pricing decisions are primarily the manufacturers’ responsibility, although she encouraged affordability, especially for children.

Lord Walker emphasized the dilemma faced by families resorting to counterfeit kits due to the unaffordable official versions, highlighting issues of poor quality and exploitation in the production process. He proposed that the government should collaborate with the FA and major brands to establish clearer guidelines on supply chains and profit margins.

The Football Association’s website currently lists adult-sized England shirts at £89.99, produced by Nike, while Scotland’s home shirt, celebrating their qualification for the World Cup after 28 years, is priced at £75. Criticism was also directed at clubs for excessive commercialization through multiple kits adorned with sponsor logos, generating substantial revenues. Baroness Twycross mentioned she was unaware of the independent football regulator’s stance on the matter.

The Mirror sought comments from the FA regarding the situation. The upcoming World Cup in North America is set to commence next month, with heightened attention on the affordability and ethical implications of football merchandise pricing.
