“23 Million Car Journeys Expected for Bank Holiday Weekend”

Date:

This bank holiday weekend is expected to see around 23 million car journeys as a result of anticipated warm weather and the commencement of the half-term break for numerous schools in England and Wales. Additionally, with the final round of Premier League matches scheduled for the weekend, drivers are being advised to plan their journeys in advance.

The AA predicts that Friday will be the busiest day, with an estimated 23.4 million journeys planned, followed by 22.8 million on Saturday, and 22.4 million on both Sunday and the bank holiday Monday.

Most of the journeys are anticipated to be local, with approximately half of those surveyed by the AA planning trips of up to 50 miles each day. Shopping is identified as the primary reason for travel by 40% of drivers, closely trailed by visiting family or friends at 39%. Furthermore, 23% are planning trips to DIY stores or garden centers, while 22% expect to travel for work.

According to separate research conducted by the RAC, 28% of drivers are becoming increasingly concerned about rising fuel costs. Data from the RAC reveals that the average price of petrol across the UK stands at 158.52p per liter, the highest since December 2022, while diesel is priced at 185.92p. This translates to £87 to fill up a family car with unleaded, which is £14 more than the previous year, and over £102 for diesel, an increase of £26 from the previous year.

Lee Morley, an expert patrol at the AA, mentioned, “A warm Bank Holiday weekend is exactly the kind of forecast that gets people thinking about a last-minute getaway, a day at the coast or a trip to see friends and family. When good weather follows an unsettled period, people tend to make impromptu plans, so drivers should be prepared for popular routes to become congested quickly.”

He further added, “Sunday could present another challenge, with the final round of Premier League matches likely to contribute to traffic congestion around stadiums, city centers, and major routes. Football fans, day-trippers, and families returning from short breaks may all be on the move simultaneously, so checking traffic conditions before departing and utilizing the AA Route Planner to anticipate delays is advisable.”

“Prior to embarking on journeys, we recommend drivers remember FLOWER — Fuel, Lights, Oil, Water, Electrics, and Rubber. These quick checks only take a few minutes but can help identify issues before they escalate into breakdowns, especially when vehicles are carrying additional passengers, luggage, or pets over longer distances.”

He also highlighted the importance of cost-effective fuel consumption strategies, stating, “Fuel prices continue to put pressure on household budgets, so drivers should aim to make every liter count. Comparing prices before refueling, minimizing unnecessary weight, maintaining proper tire pressure, and driving smoothly can all contribute to cost savings. Drivers can also utilize the AA App to locate cheaper fuel along their route, preventing them from overpaying while away.”
