The Met Office has forecasted temperatures to reach up to 33C over the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend, signaling the onset of an official heatwave. According to the national weather agency, temperatures are expected to escalate starting Friday, particularly in southern regions, with projections of hitting 30C on Saturday, 32C on Sunday, and peaking at 33C on Monday. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steve Kocher mentioned that it is highly likely that the current UK temperature record for May and Spring, set at 32.8C, will be shattered during the holiday weekend.
The impending weather conditions will mark an official heatwave, characterized by three consecutive days where temperatures exceed the established heatwave threshold, ranging from 25C to 28C across different counties. This weekend’s soaring temperatures are anticipated to surpass this threshold nationwide.
The Met Office anticipates that heatwave conditions will first materialize in the south-east on Sunday and could later extend to central and western England, as well as parts of Wales. Weather models support these predictions, with temperature anomaly maps indicating significant deviations from the seasonal average across the country.
Furthermore, maximum possible temperature maps suggest that as many as 21 counties might witness temperatures soaring to 30C or higher on Monday. In preparation for the heatwave, the British Red Cross has issued safety guidelines to help individuals stay protected during the anticipated hot spell.
Dafydd Beech, National Community Education Manager at the British Red Cross, emphasized the importance of taking precautions during warmer weather to prevent dehydration, sunburn, or heat stroke. Simple measures like using sunscreen, staying hydrated, and taking breaks from direct sunlight can significantly contribute to staying safe and enjoying the summer months. Building these habits early on can better equip individuals in the event of prolonged hot weather conditions.
