A knee replacement surgery for a patient was halted in the operating room due to the unavailability of sterilized surgical equipment. Sally ‘Ann Pyrah ‘Barnes, 68, spent approximately 18 hours in the ward before being brought to the anaesthetic room. Just as an anaesthetist was about to administer a spinal injection, the surgeon intervened, revealing that the operation had to be called off as the surgical tools were not properly sterilized.
The incident occurred at St Woolos orthopaedic unit in Newport, South Wales, following a series of similar mishaps within the health board. Recent incidents included eight patients being discharged from the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport due to the absence of clean surgical instruments. Moreover, 21 patients underwent procedures using unsterilized tools in February, with patients only being informed three weeks later and offered tests for various viruses.
Sally-Ann expressed her disappointment as her surgery was canceled abruptly on April 8 but was rescheduled for April 22, where she underwent a successful operation to replace both knees in a single procedure. She is contemplating filing a formal complaint and emphasized the importance of establishing quality control measures to prevent such incidents from recurring and affecting other patients.
In response to the incident, a petition has been initiated to demand an independent review of the health board’s leadership and culture. The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board spokesperson acknowledged the issue, stating that the surgery postponement was necessary for patient safety due to a problem with a specific piece of equipment. The matter was promptly addressed, and the patient’s surgery was completed without further complications.
