“Mother Guilty of Murdering Infant After Buying Lottery Ticket”

Date:

A mother has been convicted of killing her seven-week-old infant by causing severe head injuries and then going to purchase a lottery ticket before seeking medical help at the hospital. Sarah Ngaba, 32, admitted to inflicting critical head injuries on Eliza Ngaba, resulting in her premature death, but she denied the charge of murder.

Following a trial at Birmingham Crown Court, the jury, after deliberating for over three days, found Ngaba guilty of Eliza’s murder by a majority verdict of 10 to two. Ngaba, who will be sentenced on June 12 by Trial judge Mrs. Justice Brunner KC, had previously been found guilty of causing serious harm to the child, leaving her with permanent disabilities.

The court learned that Eliza sustained extensive head trauma from forceful shaking and a significant impact, resulting in a complex skull fracture. Ngaba delayed seeking medical help by taking a bath, purchasing a lottery ticket, and only later taking Eliza to the hospital on November 13, 2019.

Prosecution counsel Jonas Hankin KC revealed that a witness observed Eliza shaking during a video call on the morning of the incident, advising Ngaba to seek immediate medical assistance. Despite this, Ngaba opted to take a taxi to the hospital, displaying calm behavior throughout the process. The prosecution highlighted Ngaba’s lack of urgency and detachment from her daughter’s well-being during the critical moments.

After the verdict, Mrs. Justice Brunner commended the jury for their careful consideration of the case and acknowledged Eliza’s foster parents for their compassionate care. Ngaba was informed that she would face a life sentence for her actions.
