“Speeding Driver Causes Friend’s Death in Tragic Crash”

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded as a driver caused the death of his friend by speeding at 76mph in a residential area and crashing his Skoda Octavia in Staffordshire. David Barker, 27, lost control of the vehicle on Wolstanton High Street, leading to the fatal accident that claimed the life of his rear-seat passenger, Steven Field, 40.

Field suffered fatal injuries, including a severe skull fracture and traumatic brain injury, and was pronounced dead at the scene. Barker initially fled but later turned himself in. He has been sentenced to seven years and four months in prison for causing death by dangerous driving.

The incident occurred after a night out when Barker, Steven, and another companion returned to the car in the early hours of June 15. Barker’s excessive speed on Wolstanton High Street resulted in the loss of control, causing the car to hit a lamppost and roll over. CCTV footage captured Barker fleeing the scene as bystanders rushed to help.

Despite Barker’s remorse and acknowledgment of his responsibility, the court emphasized the severity of the consequences of his reckless driving. The judge described the incident as a tragedy, emphasizing the avoidable nature of the fatality due to Barker’s excessive speed. Barker was also disqualified from driving for nearly a decade and must pass a retest before regaining his license.
