A British man described as “beautiful, strong, and incredibly brave” lost his life while assisting Ukrainian forces in action. Ayrton Redfearn, aged 23 and hailing from south Devon, tragically passed away in the Donetsk region on May 9. He had joined a specialized unit supporting the Ukrainian army back in 2025, as confirmed by his mother, Natasha.
Expressing her profound grief, Natasha shared, “My beautiful, strong, and incredibly brave son was killed.” The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office stated that they are providing assistance to the family of the deceased British national and are in communication with Ukrainian authorities.
Natasha revealed her constant fear of receiving devastating news, which turned into reality on May 11, shattering her world and that of Ayrton’s 10-year-old brother. She expressed gratitude for the outpouring of tributes, messages, and support from both acquaintances and strangers.
Ayrton, who was set to receive a bravery award posthumously, had a background as a former pupil at Churston Ferrers Grammar School and a member of the Torquay Air Cadets since age 12. He enlisted in the RAF at 17 before venturing abroad. Notably, the FCDO advises against traveling to various parts of Ukraine, including Donetsk.
Dr. Ben King, Ayrton’s tutor for five years, praised him as highly intelligent and a beloved figure admired by all. Remembering Ayrton as a “lovable rogue,” Dr. King expressed deep sorrow at the shocking news and extended heartfelt condolences to the family.
Former instructors of Ayrton also paid their respects, highlighting his positive attributes and expressing a desire to attend his funeral to honor his memory. The school community was left stunned by his untimely passing, with many recalling his exceptional character and potential.
