This social media post, shared by the official White House account with the caption “bye-bye,” coincided with the conclusion of Colbert’s show, ‘The Late Show,’ which was canceled by CBS due to economic considerations after 11 seasons. Trump, unimpressed with Colbert’s final episode, labeled him a “total jerk” with no talent, ratings, or life.
Despite Trump’s criticism, Colbert, a popular late-night TV host, maintained high ratings. Trump’s animosity towards late-night hosts, including Colbert, led to his delight in Colbert’s show’s cancellation, expressing his satisfaction on Truth Social and hinting at targeting Jimmy Kimmel next.
In a retaliatory move, ABC temporarily suspended Jimmy Kimmel, another late-night host, following remarks he made about a conservative activist. Colbert and Kimmel previously engaged in a mutual appearance on each other’s shows as a playful dig at Trump, emphasizing their shared disdain for the president’s actions.
The tension between Trump and Colbert dates back to Colbert’s initial parody of Trump during a 2015 episode, where he humorously criticized Trump’s behavior. Over the years, Colbert continued to mock Trump and his policies, prompting Trump to disparage him as a “dead man walking.”
Heather Hendershot, a communication studies and journalism professor at Northwestern University, suggests that the cancellation of Colbert’s show may be remembered as a politically motivated decision orchestrated by the Trump administration, signaling a moment of authoritarian control.
