Two Italian men have been ordered by a court in Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy, to compensate the parents of a student who tragically died in Majorca. The incident occurred when the student fell from a hotel balcony while trying to escape a rape attempt. The ruling, issued on May 20, mandates that Alessandro Albertoni and Luca Vanneschi pay over €1 million in total to the parents of Martina Rossi, who passed away at the age of 20 in Palma.
The court specified that Martina died in 2011 while fleeing from an attempted sexual assault by the two men inside a hotel room. Initially considered a suicide by Spanish authorities, the case was later reopened in Italy at the insistence of Martina’s parents. After a series of legal proceedings, Albertoni and Vanneschi were convicted of attempted sexual violence and involvement in Martina’s death.
Despite the expiration of the criminal charge related to Martina’s death, the court held the men responsible in civil proceedings. The judgment awarded specific compensations to Martina’s mother and father. Bruno Rossi, Martina’s father, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating that the compensation would be donated to a foundation supporting women affected by violence. He also criticized the lack of apology and minimal financial contribution made by the defendants.
The ruling is immediately enforceable, with the option for the defendants’ lawyers to appeal and request a suspension of the payment order. The legal battle, which spanned several years, culminated in a significant verdict that provides closure to Martina’s family and underscores accountability in the tragic incident.
