Police in Wellington are conducting an investigation following a disturbing incident where a woman was physically assaulted and sexually assaulted. A man in his 20s has been taken into custody in Sussex, approximately 150 miles away, on suspicion of rape in connection to the assault that occurred on May 22 in the early hours.
The victim reported that she was attacked and raped in the North Street vicinity around 2:20 am before the assailant fled in a car. She was promptly taken to a hospital for medical attention and later released, with support services being offered to her.
The apprehended suspect was taken into custody overnight, and his vehicle was impounded as per Somerset Live. Detective Inspector Wendy Fellowes, a member of Avon and Somerset Police’s Operation Bluestone specialized unit for investigating serious sexual offenses, expressed gratitude to the public for providing potential evidence, including CCTV footage of the suspect’s vehicle, described as a white Volkswagen Golf.
Fellowes encouraged the public to review any footage of specific areas during the early hours of the incident and urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
