Britain is likely to experience more spring heatwaves due to climate change causing increased ‘extreme’ fluctuations in the weather, according to experts. Recently, a long-standing May temperature record dating back to World War II was broken, with the Met Office recording a provisional temperature of 33.5C at London Heathrow, surpassing the previous high of 32.8C set in 1944.
Although the sunny weather was welcomed over the bank holiday weekend, leading to a surge in visitors to UK beaches, parks, and attractions, the Met Office labeled the heatwave as “unprecedented” for this time of year. Climate scientists had earlier predicted such occurrences could happen, as indicated in a study released last summer by Met Office researchers. The study revealed that the likelihood of surpassing the May temperature records set in 1944 has significantly increased due to ongoing carbon emissions warming the planet.
Furthermore, the study highlighted that breaking the 32.8C May record has become about three times more probable with human-induced climate change, shifting what was once a once-in-a-century event to an expectation roughly every 33 years. Historical data from 1884 also indicates that the three warmest springs on record have all occurred since 2017.
The current heatwave underscores a shift where previously ‘exceptional’ weather events are now becoming commonplace in British daily life, according to a leading climate expert. Professor Chris Brierley, Professor of Climate Science at University College London, emphasized that the impacts of climate change are likely to manifest through more instances of extreme heat, with potential health and environmental consequences. Heat health alerts issued by the UK Health Security Agency have been extended across England, with amber alerts indicating increased strain on the NHS and a predicted rise in deaths for specific regions, while yellow alerts cover other areas.
