Nicola Sturgeon expressed deep shock over her estranged husband’s admission to embezzling over £400,000 from the SNP to fund his extravagant lifestyle. Peter Murrell, the party’s former chief executive, confessed to misusing party funds for luxury purchases, including a high-end motorhome, watches, fountain pens, and other items.
Court records revealed that Murrell fabricated invoices to buy a luxury car, which he later sold at a lower price, and used party funds for personal expenses like hand cream, household items, and even a toilet seat. Following his arrest in April 2023 as part of a police probe into the SNP’s finances, he was formally charged in April 2024.
Murrell was recently taken into custody after pleading guilty to embezzlement, and he is awaiting sentencing in June, facing a potential lengthy prison term. His actions have deeply affected Sturgeon, who emphasized that she had no knowledge of his misuse of party funds and felt deceived by his actions.
The scandal involving Murrell, who had a long tenure as the SNP’s chief executive, has caused a significant upheaval within the party. Party leader John Swinney publicly apologized to members for the breach of trust, labeling it an “overwhelming betrayal.” Murrell’s lawyer entered the guilty plea on his behalf, acknowledging the gross breach of trust he committed over a 12-year period.
Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston condemned Murrell’s actions, describing them as a blatant abuse of public trust and a misuse of party funds to sustain a lavish lifestyle. Murrell’s intricate attempts to conceal his embezzlement through false records and accounting have led to severe repercussions, as he now faces accountability for his prolonged criminal behavior.
