“England’s Gordon Banks Poisoned by CIA in 1970 World Cup?”

Date:

A startling revelation has resurfaced, suggesting that England goalkeeper Gordon Banks may have been deliberately poisoned by the CIA during the 1970 World Cup. This alleged incident occurred just before England’s crucial quarter-final match against West Germany in Mexico, which Banks missed due to illness, ultimately impacting the team’s performance.

Former BBC reporter Gabriel Gatehouse has delved into this mysterious claim, indicating a potential involvement of the CIA in poisoning Banks. The investigation, spanning three years and various locations including Stoke-on-Trent and Mexico, points to a credible source – a senior US senator who reportedly received inside information from the CIA.

According to Gatehouse, football writer Brian Glanville raised suspicions in his 2007 book, hinting at a possible sabotage against Banks. Allegations from another journalist, Bob Oxby, suggest that a relative, US Senator Stuart Symington, hinted at CIA interference to prevent England from defeating Brazil.

The circumstances surrounding Banks falling ill at the Guadalajara Hilton after a celebratory gathering following England’s victory over Czechoslovakia add to the intrigue. Gatehouse questions the CIA’s motive, speculating that the agency may have aimed to support Brazil due to geopolitical tensions during the Cold War era.

Despite initial skepticism, a classified document from the CIA’s archives dated 1971 acknowledges the political significance of the World Cup, suggesting a potential interest in influencing the tournament’s outcome. However, conflicting opinions from the team doctor Neil Phillips attribute Banks’s illness to unfortunate circumstances rather than foul play.

Historian Grant Bage, known for his work on England manager Sir Alf Ramsey, acknowledges long-standing rumors of CIA involvement in Banks’s illness. Bage expresses optimism that the investigative efforts of reputable journalists could shed light on this intriguing theory.

Gordon Banks, a revered figure in Stoke City’s history, passed away in Madeley, Staffordshire at the age of 81 in February 2019. His absence during the crucial World Cup match and subsequent implications on England’s performance remain a contentious topic, fueling ongoing discussions and speculations.
