The family of a 13-year-old boy who tragically drowned while trying to cool off on the hottest day of the year has paid their respects at the site of the incident. The boy, known as Reco, encountered difficulties in a reservoir in Yorkshire on Bank Holiday Monday in front of numerous witnesses. His family identified him and placed flowers at Leadbeater Dam, near Halifax, West Yorkshire.
Although the family chose not to make a public statement, they left heartfelt floral tributes like “RIP Reco. Miss you Millions” and “RIP Reco. You will be forever missed.” Witnesses reported that the boy drowned in the presence of a crowd engaging in various activities like paddling, swimming, and picnicking at the secluded reservoir location.
The tragic incident occurred at a remote reservoir without any nearby residences. Accessible only via a rugged path across fields, the area lacks warning signs about swimming hazards. Local resident Natalie Smith recounted the sudden commotion caused by emergency services arriving at the scene, highlighting the unexpected nature of the tragedy on a busy day at the reservoir.
West Yorkshire Police responded to the incident at Leadbeater Dam, confirming the retrieval of the boy’s body from the water. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Investigations are ongoing, but there are no suspicions of foul play surrounding the incident.
Sadly, Reco was one of two teenagers who lost their lives in separate water-related incidents during the holiday weekend. Another victim, a 15-year-old girl, was found deceased in a lake at Kingsbury Water Park in Staffordshire. Emergency services recovered her body, but she could not be revived.
Following these tragedies, Warwickshire Police issued a cautionary message about the risks associated with open water activities, especially during warm weather. They emphasized the dangers of cold water shock and urged the public to avoid unsupervised swimming in lakes and reservoirs.
In a separate incident, a man in his 60s perished in Cornwall while attempting to rescue family members in distress in the water. Despite efforts to save him, he suffered a cardiac arrest and could not be revived. The recent heatwave, which saw record-breaking temperatures across the UK, has raised concerns about water safety and the need for vigilance during recreational activities near bodies of water.
