Nearly a dozen primary schools in Ireland had to shut down today due to a threatening email suggesting a potential mass shooting. Over 10 schools in County Carlow took the precautionary measure following the receipt of the email, which authorities suspect might be a hoax.
Among the closed schools are St Fiacc’s NS, Ballyconnell NS, Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, St Laserian’s NS, Rathvilly Primary School, Scoil Molaise in Old Leighlin, Scoil Mhuire Lourdes, Rathmore NS, Drumphea School, and St Columba’s. The closure decision was made after the schools received the alarming threat, as reported by Irish Mirror.
St Joseph’s National School, also affected, closed its doors. Headteacher and local councilor Fergal Browne shared insights on the incident with local radio station KCLR. He mentioned that the threatening email, sent from a Gmail account to multiple schools in Carlow, contained incorrect email addresses for some recipients. Browne expressed skepticism about the authenticity of the threat, speculating it could have originated from abroad.
Browne reassured parents, mentioning the collaboration between law enforcement and schools to address the situation. He highlighted the increased police presence in the town and emphasized the safety measures in place at schools. Browne expressed hope for a peaceful resolution and future strategies to handle such threats effectively.
