A grandmother honored her late husband’s memory by continuing to play his chosen lottery numbers, resulting in a £1 million win a year after his passing. Rose Tresadern, 80, a retired office manager, along with her son Barry, 52, and daughter Julie, 57, secured the life-changing jackpot using the numbers selected by her late husband, Derek. Derek, a former business analyst who passed away at 83 after a brief illness, had picked the winning numbers before his demise. Rose, residing near Southend in Essex, expressed that playing Derek’s numbers was a way to keep his memory alive, and the unexpected win of £1 million was a remarkable twist of fate.
Recalling the moment of discovery, Rose shared how she was alone at home when she realized the win and immediately contacted her son in disbelief. The winning numbers from the draw on April 18 were 1, 4, 12, 15, and 39, with the bonus ball 48. Overwhelmed by the unexpected windfall, Rose mentioned that the prize money would facilitate her move to a more suitable retirement home to accommodate her mobility challenges, alongside her cherished Maltese dog, Amira.
The win also inspired Rose to consider buying a new engagement ring in memory of Derek, as a special token of remembrance. Her children, Barry and Julie, are deliberating on how to utilize their share of the winnings. Kathy Garrett, a senior winners’ adviser at the National Lottery operator Allwyn, congratulated Rose, Barry, and Julie on their extraordinary win, emphasizing the sentimental aspect of Derek selecting the winning numbers years ago, which the family continued to play in his honor.
