Reform UK Candidate Backs Russia’s Crimea Annexation

Date:

The candidate representing Reform UK in the Makerfield by-election recently stated that Russia was justified in its annexation of Crimea in 2014. Robert Kenyon, the candidate, expressed agreement with a social media post characterizing Moscow’s actions in Crimea as a form of democratic exercise.

This revelation adds to a series of contentious remarks made by Kenyon, who is challenging Labour’s Andy Burnham in the Greater Manchester constituency. In a forum discussion from March 2014, Kenyon supported Russia’s actions in Crimea, drawing parallels to the UK’s stance on the Falklands.

Following the annexation, over 100,000 Ukrainians fled Crimea amidst increased suppression by the Kremlin. Kenyon’s controversial statements extend beyond geopolitics, including derogatory comments about women and explicit remarks about Carol Vorderman, for which he later expressed regret.

Moreover, Kenyon’s past online activity includes disparaging remarks about women’s capabilities and criticism towards figures like Nigel Farage and Donald Trump. His stance on Brexit and association with Kremlin viewpoints have drawn criticism, with Defence Minister Luke Pollard denouncing Kenyon’s alignment with pro-Russian sentiments.

In a separate development, a group of MPs has urged the Equality and Human Rights Commission to investigate Reform UK over allegations of Islamophobia. Several Labour MPs have accused Reform UK of violating the Equality Act, prompting a response from a Reform UK spokesperson, who clarified that Kenyon’s comments predate his political involvement and affirmed his opposition to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

Despite the controversies, Reform UK remains supportive of Kenyon’s candidacy, emphasizing his local ties and potential as a Member of Parliament for Makerfield.
