A mother, Nicole Blain, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her 19-day-old daughter, Thea Jane Wilson. Blain was found guilty following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow and must serve a minimum of 19 years before being considered for parole.
Baby Thea sustained severe injuries, including three skull fractures, brain damage, and bleeding behind the eyes, during an incident at Blain’s residence in Greenock, Inverclyde, on July 14, 2023. Medical experts determined that Thea’s injuries were consistent with violent shaking and impact against a hard surface.
In an attempt to cover up the crime, Blain falsely claimed that another child present in the home had caused Thea’s injuries. However, prosecutors dismissed these claims as baseless, and a pathologist confirmed that the injuries were not consistent with being accidentally dropped by a child.
Blain was convicted by jurors, and the judge, Lord Scott, announced that she would receive a life sentence. Blain, who had been out on bail, was taken into custody while visibly distressed. Thea, described as “perfect” at birth on June 25, 2023, tragically lost her life due to the actions of her mother.
In a statement, Police Scotland detailed the events leading to Blain’s arrest, emphasizing the tragic loss of the infant’s life. Detective Chief Inspector Laura Young expressed the gravity of the situation, highlighting the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and partner agencies in investigating the case.
