Kim Oakhill, a 51-year-old woman, faced a life-altering situation when what she thought were just night sweats and hot flushes turned out to be a severe diagnosis. She is now raising funds to access a specialized drug not available through the NHS.
Before being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer at the age of 48 in 2024, Kim was in good health. However, she started experiencing persistent leg pain, fatigue, night sweats, and hot flashes. Initially, medical professionals attributed her symptoms to perimenopause and prescribed hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which provided no relief.
Despite an increase in her HRT dosage, Kim’s symptoms worsened. By February 2025, she developed a cough that was initially thought to be an unrelated infection. Subsequent diagnoses included acid reflux, asthma, and a chest infection, but no treatment proved effective. Additional symptoms emerged, including changes in her voice.
Following a CT scan to rule out serious conditions, Kim was informed the next day that she had a cancerous mass in her right lung, classified as stage four, with the cancer having spread to her heart and brain linings. Despite initially being mistaken for perimenopause symptoms, these were actually the early signs of her cancer.
After undergoing intensive chemotherapy to extend her life, Kim experienced severe limb pain, hair loss, and sickness. Doctors later informed her that it was uncertain how soon the cancer would recur, with no further options available through the NHS at that point.
With a projected life expectancy of less than a year, Kim is now striving to raise £150,000 for private targeted therapy. She remains optimistic for her family and herself, emphasizing the importance of dispelling the misconception that lung cancer only affects smokers. She stresses that anyone with lungs can be at risk of lung cancer.
